Spider-Man Cartoons: Classics for Our Time
Cartoons have been a beloved part of television for ages. Most every popular fictional character has had their own cartoon at some point or another. Many adults fondly remember sitting in front of the television on Saturday morning, enjoying their favorite cartoons. One favorite of many boys and girls alike were the Spider-Man cartoons. Since his first appearance with Marvel Comics in the early 1960's, Spider-Man has been a favorite superhero of many people both young and old. These cartoons, or animated series, began in 1967 and can even be seen on some channels to this day.
The very first cartoon was named Spider-Man and was shown on the ABC network from 1967 to 1970. Once the animation company that made the show went bankrupt, animator Ralph Bakshi took over. Anyone who remembers this series is sure to remember the poor quality of the animation, due in part to a very small budget. The voice of Spider-Man was done by a man named Paul Soles. In the early 1970's, Spider-Man made some guest appearances on the popular children's show The Electric Company. Rather than speaking, Spider-Man used thought bubbles that the viewer had to read.
In 1981, Marvel hoped to introduce a new generation to Spider-Man with the resurgence of a syndicated cartoon loosely based on the one that aired in the sixties. NBC took notice, and towards the end of this syndicated series another one was created called Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. This show teamed Spider-Man up with friends like Iceman from the X-Men and an alluring female character named Firestar. In this series, the voice of Spidey was done by Dan Gilvezan.
The next cartoon incarnation came in 1994 and was called Spiderman: The Animated Series. This show aired on the Fox Network and had the largest budget of any Spider-Man cartoon to date. It's thought that this series is the closest to the original comic book story, with a continuous story being explored per season. This cartoon was the longest running, lasting for five seasons.
After that series, there were a variety of short-lived Spider-Man cartoons. If you're eager for a new Spider-Man animated series, you may not have much longer to wait. It's rumored that a brand new cartoon is coming out around the same time as the May 2007 release of the Spiderman 3 movie!
