The Spider-Man Movie -- A Can't Miss Blockbuster!
If you find yourself at the video store looking for quality entertainment, check out the Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire in the lead role and Kirsten Dunst as his love interest. Released in 2002, this film was the very first to make more than $100 million in the course of a single weekend. One of the best things about this movie is the attention that's been given to authenticity. Anyone who grew up reading Spider-Man comics will recognize the storyline.
Peter Parker is a shy, somewhat tortured teen who is intellectually gifted yet troubled in other ways. He lives with his aunt and uncle in Queens, and has a crush on Mary Jane Watson, the girl next door. One could say Peter is a loner, with only Harry Orsborn as a friend. Even this friendship is fraught with conflict and jealousy, because Harry's father Norman prefers Peter over his own son. While touring a genetics lab, a bioengineered and radioactive spider bites Peter. This is what causes Peter Parker to develop his amazing superhero powers.
Peter, with these new powers, can jump from building to building and fight off bullies. His aunt and uncle begin to worry about him, and his uncle even confronts him with some advice. Peter wants to make enough money to buy a car by winning a wrestling match, but is cheated out of the money. On his way home from the match, he discovers that his uncle has been shot. After his uncle dies in his presence, Peter vows to bring the killer to justice, and does.
But that's not all. In danger of losing his company, Norman Osborn goes through dangerous experiments that transform him into the evil Green Goblin. Throughout the movie, Peter and his superhero persona battle the forces of evil and eventually defeats the Goblin. As he is dying, Norman begs Peter not to tell his son Harry about his alternate evil persona, and Peter agrees. Harry discovers Spider-Man has killed his father, and vows to get revenge, still unaware that Peter is Spider-Man.
The end of the first Spider-Man movie is satisfying yet open-ended enough to make viewers eager to watch the second installment. In 2007, the third Spiderman film will be released and features villans like Sandman and Venom. It's sure to be a hit, especially if the first two films are any indication of its quality!
